Free cutting steel is a collective term for steel types that are extremely suitable for CNC-controlled machining. For parts with a high degree of machining and which are produced in large quantities, one of these qualities is often used. By adding sulfur (S, for short chips) and lead (Pb for less resistance, better lubrication), turning speeds are higher, and feed rates can be increased.
Depending on the application and further processing, multiple qualities are applicable.
Since free cutting steels are often processed on CNC machines, tolerance is very important due to automatic feed. The standard tolerance is ISO h9. In addition, the axes are provided with a one- or two-sided bevel, so that the axes never come into contact with the feed bushing.
The standard lengths of the axes are approximately 3000-3200 mm, perfect for the standard material cassettes. If the cassette is smaller, which is increasingly the case, lengths of 1000 or 1500 mm can also be offered. Of course, other lengths are also possible, up to about 6700 mm.
